If I Could

If I could change the sun
I would change the way it rises each morning
But not the way your bright smile lifts me up when I’m falling

If I could change the birds in the sky
I would change their chirping during the spring
But not what your caresses and kisses bring

If I could change the pine trees in the forest
I would change the way they live even during winter
But never the way your touch warms me when I falter

If I could change the sea
I would change its angry sounds as it crashes on the shore
But not how you appease me when I start to deplore

If I could change the night
I would change its tyranny over the day
But not your mouth that rules me when you utter words no one else can say

If I could change the world and all the other planets too
I’d change everything, darling
But never you

– Quinn

* Penned in 2003, I had this poem for a be-whatever-you-want-to-be project in high school. I said I wanted to be a poet simply because I didn’t want to (and couldn’t) learn the guitar or act on stage or whatever exhibitions the other kids did. I already had a couple of pieces and I only needed to compile and submit them, so”poet” was the most convenient option then. ♥
