Sugar-Coated, Snow-Pretend Christmas

It’s been a year since I’ve been planning to post this!

So last year, just a couple of weeks before I was due to give birth, me and my girls decided to have a mini Christmas party. We wanted to have Christmas-themed food and look. Instead, we ended up with funny looking reindeers, faceless snowman heads, and warm scarves wrapped around our already sweaty necks in the middle of a humid December evening.

In other words, it was so much fun!

Cebu Burger Kingdom

I didn’t realize how much burgers I’ve had in the last four years that I have been with DM until I  organized my computer photos and saw a bunchload of ’em!

Being food enthusiasts who enjoy exploring different cuisines together, we’re quite lucky to be in a city where restaurants are sprouting like mushrooms ever so dramatically in the past couple of years. While he loves taking me to new places with a goal of allowing my easy-to-please palate to experience more, he often complains about how I always end up ordering the same thing over and over again: Burger.

And so without any meticulous evaluation on how firm the bun was or how juicy and rich the patty was, here are some of the burgers I have remembered to amateurishly and hastily capture before devouring.  I’m not the food critic type (that’s DM’s role), I’m just always the hungry girl taken out for a burger, so pardon my vague recollection!

Army Navy

There was this big fuzz when Army Navy opened and true enough, it didn’t disappoint.

Army Navy

Big Daddy Truck

Better known with their catchy tagline, “Who’s your daddy?”, you’ll find yourself nodding and succumbing to this bad boy.

Whos your daddy

Big Tom’s Charbroiled Burger

Big Tom’s is easily one of my top three burgers. Either it was really good or I was just really hungry.

Big Toms

Buddies made noise when they opened in Cebu because of their burger-eating contest. DM actually tried it with his friends but they all failed.

This one was hands down a great alternative to the greasy, guilty burgers we usually have. The bun was dry but tasty, the patty was moist, and I actually enjoyed the fresh looking greens.

Casa Verde

Casa Verde is famous for its baby back ribs, but even those who are not big fans of burgers must be familiar of their Big Bang Burger. DM and I shared this with another couple. It was that big.

Dong Juan

Even before it became mainstream, Dong Juan have always had a special place in my heart. It’s where DM and I first had our date. So many other more followed. Although our forever favorite at DJ is their cheesy mozzarella sticks, this fat burger is, safe to say, a must-try as well.

Don Merto’s

Another DM I love, Don Merto’s is one of Cebu’s best kept-secret… a secret we were delighted to uncover! Look at that melting cheese over that thick patty.

Dessert Factory

For a quick burger fix, Dessert Factory can be your go-to place.

Dessert Factory

East West

It’s mostly the desserts that often draws me to East West, but this burger with mojos was worth trying.

Fat Cow

My freshest burger memory: Had this Grilled Bacon Burger at Fat Cow yesterday. Despite my newly installed braces, I had a great time munching this one!

Flame It!

Flame It is my favorite snack to bring whenever I go to the movies. In the spirit of Christmas, they have this red and green IG-worthy burgers every year.

DM is so gonna hate me for not giving justice to this Frontgate burger with this ugly photo! They started out as a small resto located at a school’s front gate and even then we were already in love with it. BEST BURGER IN CEBU… according to my favorite food critique (because he’s my fiancé).

Perhaps one of the pricier burgers I’ve had and I don’t remember regretting it.

Mr. A Bar and Restaurant

Simple yet special. Snack-sized and serves as a good company while you’re relaxing in Cebu’s favorite hilltop location.

Mr. A

 Sprockets Cafe

I’m not sure if the first one qualifies as a burger but the buns at Sprockets are good enough for your late night cravings.

Other burgers I remember enjoying (or just remember) include Burger Joint, Burger King in Manila (when it was not in Cebu yet), Wendy’s (Manila), and Duz Grill. My outside-of-Cebu favorite however is this!

Shake Shack (London)

Was just so glad to have had a taste of my comfort food in the middle of another city!

Whip-Anything-From-the-Pantry Kind of Dessert

Warning: This post’s title says is all.

A few days ago Mr. DM came home and told me that he bought something for me. “I saw it and thought it’d be something you’d fancy,” he said while unwrapping two Balls mason jars. I was of course pleased! Upon handing it to me, he added, “You might want to whip something healthy with that.”

Yep, he was expecting something healthy.

But since I never bothered to consider that (sorry), I whipped something from a couple of things I saw in our kitchen. Fibisco choco crunchies, ice cream, some fruits, and I made a little effort of making pancakes. And… ta-da!

PS: I actually liked how the ice cream melted on the pancake and how the the choco crunchies added, uhm, crunch, to it.

Regardless, it was made of love. ♥

When He Cooks

This breakfast buddybirthday boyspecial ally I was talking about in previous posts, he’s got a secret passion. He loves cooking! This works really well for me since I love eating. Pigging out and trying out newly opened restaurants are a shared guilty pleasure. But whenever he has the time, he’d treat me to a more intimate, more personal dining experience. I always tell him about how much I admire Gordon Ramsay—for his cooking skill which I could only dream of actually experiencing and for his iron fist in running a kitchen—that I even got a copy of his published memoir. One day I caught Mr. Home Cook watching videos of Chef Ramsay. Such cute and thoughtful gesture led to an array of differently served eggs for the next few days! For my other favorite dishes of his, here are some snippets, though these amateur photos don’t give even the slightest justice to just how scrumptious they were.

I will never ever ever get tired of pancakes for breakfast! He surprised me with this one because apparently, “we haven’t had breakfast together in days.”

Often I’d just say random names of food and he’d whip them together no matter what time of the day. This one I had for dinner.

Like Sheldon Cooper, I want my spaghetti with tiny slices of hotdog.

Garlic bread, of course, should come with it.

Cooking is about passion, so it may look slightly temperamental in a way that it’s too assertive to the naked eye.— Gordon Ramsay

The Breakfast Club

I’m never a morning person. I don’t spring out of bed with a big smile on my face, ready to embrace the bright shiny day ahead. I snooze my alarm more times than I should and I spend the rest of the morning avoiding people until after lunch time.

This attitude is apparent in how I got accustomed to skip breakfast for the majority of my life. Even during holidays in a fancy hotel or beach resort, the free breakfast buffet is never enough reason for me to get up and catch the dramatic sunrise. Eat vs. sleep? People who know me well know it’s always the latter.

In rare occasions that I do get up and eat, I often find myself enjoying breakfast heartily. After all, waffles, pancakes, eggs, fruits, bacoooooon are the stuff my dreams are often made of. It’s therefore an added joy when I see places that serve breakfast all day long. It’s like having my favorites without sacrificing my sleep! To celebrate my new found happiness in this staple part of the day, here are some of the most memorable breakfast meals I ever had.

Disclaimer: I’m not a food photographer and I always forget my basic training in plating whenever I’m about to devour heaven, so don’t expect good photos here.

A local coffee shop, Brown Cup, serves one of the best all-day breakfast in town!

Another one from Brown Cup. I think I’ve tried all sets of their breakfast offering.

I had a very light breakfast at this camping resort down south (Terra Manna) as I was planning to slip into my bikini right after the meal! The food was good but the view was superb.

The first breakfast I ever made for the boyf was not an actual breakfast but a take-out from Jollibee during his birthday two years ago.

Childhood Dream: Homemade Chocolate Brownies

One of my favorite treats as a kid were chocolate brownies. For some reason, I found it to be so rare, at least in my world. I then grew up realizing that my mother never had a sweet tooth so it was so much easier for her to keep us away from the kinds that would ruin our teeth and would result to us being overweight (plus, diabetes has always been in the family).

So when I started baking, all I looked forward to was the day I get to bake my very own brownies. The moment a certain brownie recipe was introduced in class, I remember feeling so fulfilled I could just skip the next classes.

You could just imagine how, after learning to do it, I’ve baked so many batches of chocolate brownies for the next couple of months that our home smelled like a ginger house, only it was rich cocoa. Each time, I tried playing with the toppings and explored the sweetness level and taste. I recently experimented on adding coffee and it was such a delight!

Unfortunately, I don’t normally bake and Instagram, so I’ve very limited photos of my homemade goodies. But here’s a one that features the set I made for a friend’s intimate house warming party. I ran out of small marshmallows and I’m terrible at slicing, so there! ♥
